Absheron economic region has an important economic-geographical location as it covers Absheron and Khizy regions, city of Baku and Sumgait. Economic Regions covers the area of 5.9 thousand km2 (the 7% of the territory of the Azerbaijan Republic). The landscape of the economic region consists of hills, foothill plains and low mountains. Dry subtropical climate is specific to this region.
The economic-geographical location of the region has a serious impact on distribution of population. Absheron has better conditions than other economic regions with regards to specific weight of population, quantity of settlements, use of soil, population density, concentration of production, infrastructure development level etc.
Absheron Economic Region is one of the regions that have large natural resources. Economic Region has resources of oil, gas, sawn, limestone, cement raw material, quartz and mortar sand.
Absheron peninsula has rich balneal resources. Mud volcanoes, mineral springs and saltwater lakes have therapeutic importance.
Absheron Economic Region is the only region, which does not have local drinking water resources. The drinking water is supplied to the Economic Region by channels from Samur and Kur rivers. Despite the fact that there are various water supply lines to the Absheron, problem with drinking water supply still remains unsolved.
Absheron Economic Region is an Industrial Region and main industries are oil and gas production, petrochemistry and chemistry, heavy industry, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy, energetic, engineering industry, electrical engineering. There are large construction fields, transportation and services provision businesses in the region. Economic Region has a strong fuel-energy base. Significant part of the produced oil and gas and generated power in the country falls to this region. Recently the production of new oil, gas fields have strengthened the strategic importance of the region and increased its significance in the world economy.
Chemistry and petrochemistry are leading industries of the Economic Region. Ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy are also important in the Economic Region. Construction enterprises of the Economic Region manufacture glass, polymer construction materials etc.
The main part of agricultural sector of the Absheron Economic Region consists of local economic entities including dairy and beef animal breeding, poultry keeping, sheep-breeding, vegetable-growing, melon and gourd growing, vine-growing, flower-growing and dry subtropical fruit-growing. The agricultural climate of the Economic Region is suitable for growing of olive, saffron, pistachios, almond, fig, “ag shany” and “gara shany” grape sorts, water-melon and other agricultural products.
Absheron Economic Region has a developed infrastructure. Primary railways, roads, water-ways and airways of Azerbaijan cross the territory of the region. The potential for development of transportation sector increases as the territory of the region is located at the coast of the Caspian Sea. Most part of the transportation means are used in the Economic Region.
Furthermore, the Economic Region has a large network of social facilities. Large scientific-research institutions, universities, medical facilities that have national importance and other infrastructure facilities operate within the territory of the Economic Region.
Climate-balneal conditions of Economic Region support the establishment of beach areas along the Caspian coast.
