Economic Regions of the Azerbaijan Republic.
 Lankaran Economic Region
Lankaran Economic Region of Azerbaijan Republic covers Astara, Jalilabad, Lerik, Masalli, Yardimly, and Lankaran administrative regions and is located in the south-eastern part of Azerbaijan. The The eastern part of Economic Region is in the coast of Caspian Sea and western and southern parts has borders with Islamic Republic of Iran. The area of the Economic Region is 6.08 thousand km2 (7% of the territory of the Azerbaijan). The Landscape of the Economic Region can be divided into two parts Lankaran plain and Talish Mountains. 26% of the territory of the region is covered with forest. This region is different from other parts of the country. 7 of 13 climate exist in the economic region. In general the climate is humid subtropical.
The favorable natural conditions of the economic region had an impact on distribution of population. The population of the region is 753.7 thousand people (the 9.3% of population of country).
Lankaran Economic Region has poor natural resources. Some rock products like construction sand, clay and etc. play an important role in the economical development of the region. Economic Regions has rich mineral water resources.

Agrarian-industrial complex is the main component of the economy the economy. Humid subtropical climate, fertile soil, water and appropriate labor force creates a big potential for the development of the agriculture. The main sectors of the agriculture include early vegetable-growing, tea-growing, vine-growing and grain-growing. This economic region produces 99% of tea, 27% of vegetable, 15% of grain, 24% of potato, 13% grape, 10% of fruits produced in Azerbaijan. Plain parts of Masalli, Lankaran, Astara regions are specialized in tea-growing and vegetable and melon plantation. Vine-growing is more developed in Jalilabad region. Main agricultural sectors in Lerik and Yardimly are grain-growing, cattle-breeding and tea-growing. Citrus fruit-growing is very developed in this Economic Region.

The industry of Lankaran Economic Region is based on processing of local agricultural products, especially fruit-growing and fishing products. Food industry produces the 90% of industrial products of the region. The main sectors of the food industry include fish processing (Narimanabad fish plant, Lankaran fish-canning plant), tea, fruit-vegetable canning, vine production and tobacco processing. Also there are some enterprises involved in production of meat, milk, cheese and bread. There are enterprises including construction material, furniture production, vehicle repair, instrument-making, maintenance and repair of agricultural machinery. Poultry keeping industry is developed in Lankaran.

Transportation system has an important impact on the development of Lankaran Economic Region. Baku-Astara railway and Baku-Astara motorway has an important impact on cargo and passenger transportation and on development of economic relations between Azerbaijan and Islamic Republic of Iran. There is an operating Baku-Lankaran airway.
Beautiful landscape, hot and cold mineral waters, favorable natural climate and developed transportation network creates favorable conditions for development of recreation and tourism. Lankaran Tourist Base and Meshasu clinic already operate in Lankaran. There is university (Lankaran State University), network of secondary schools, hospitals, dramatic theatre, ethnographic museum and other social facilities operating in the region.
